THE HAIR APPARENT

There has been a suggestion that the sharp, fifties inspired, pomade enhanced hairstyle popular today will thaw in the Spring Summer, with a looser, freer style in the ascendancy and a return to styling products such as moulding pastes and clays.

If there was no indication that the style was to tip into the mainstream in a major way, I’d agree that clean cut will be soon replaced by the next seasonal style. But two things tell me that it is going to tip - in a big way – and will be with us for quite some time.

The first is Mad Men. The series, billed as the next Sopranos, launched last night in the UK to great acclaim, and I think it could lead to a return to 60s sartorial splendour and not just lots of great haircuts. I think there will be far more to be said about this show in the future.

The second is that the hair care giants are pushing new pomades in a major way. Since they sponsor all the major hair competitions and stylists, as well as owning key salons, I think they have a vested interest keeping the style in the cultural currency.

I am so desperate to see this show. I've recently abandoned my mid-hawk for the side-part and say there is no going back for me (although I may tweak it depending on my mood).

I actually believe that the 'cleaned up,'square haircut is actually at the height of its stylishness right now. It's actually become my trademark in the same vein as Anna Wintour's célèbre bob.

It is certainly the hair of the moment and so it should be! The bed head style had been around for far too long! I have heard nothing but good things about this about show, my expectation levels are extremely high...

Ah, it's like punk never happened. The show is great, but most people working on Madison Avenue in the early 60s were downtrodden office drones (nicely skewered in Sloan Wilson's book The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit), hence their conformist hair styles. (For more advertising nostalgia, see my own book Adland.) Fortunately, we all know what happened next: The Stones, The Doors, The Grateful Dead and Woodstock. Don't let fashion force you to dress like your grandfather: start growing your hair way beyond your collar, wearing paisley and burning your draft card, right now. That way, you'll be ahead of the curve.

I love this show and I love the look. Will the hair style of the early 60s come back in for women? I'm sure we'll see a little bit.

Mad Men will definitely be a fashion catalyst.
